HOME BIRTH

Why is it that when a woman in this country announces that she wants to have herhttp://www.parentsconnect.com/assets/blank.gif baby at home, she is greeted with horrified stares and talk of cults? Throughout the ages, plenty of people came into this world without the benefit of a hospital … and I'm not talking about the Dark Ages, either.

Today many hospitals have their own birth horror stories: women being handed the wrong baby, misplacing babies, babies being given incorrect doses of medicine, women not being able to bond with their babies because they were whisked away to incubators, etc. Obviously, a homebirth carries its own risks, but unless the pregnancy is high-risk, I don't think there is any reason not to do a homebirth if that's what the mama wants. BEFORE THE BIRTH

Making a connection with your unborn child can strengthen the bond you share, make you feel closer, and enrich you and your baby's lives.
Jeanne Berkowitz is expecting a baby in late January. In October, Jeanne and her husband went to Hawaii for a "babymoon." While there, Jeanne got a massage from a woman who works frequently with pregnant women.
"She told me that it was important to massage my belly often to introduce the baby to human touch and to the world outside the womb," Jeanne recalls, adding that she now massages the baby regularly, as does her husband. "We can often feel him respond by kicking back and changing positions."
Jeanne says she's not an expert on the benefits of prenatal massage, but reports that "it's fun for us, helps us (especially my husband) think of the baby as a real person, and I can't help but think it has to be good for the baby, too."

CHILDBIRTH

A normal pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, or 280 days, after the beginning of the last menstrual period. Occasionally women go into labor before the expected date of birth, resulting in a premature infant. About 7 percent of all infants are premature—that is, born before the 37th week of pregnancy. Babies born just a few weeks early usually develop normally. Recent advances in the care of premature infants now allow many babies who are born after only 25 to 26 weeks of pregnancy to survive.

Delivery, the process by which the baby is expelled from the uterus through the birth canal and into the world, begins with irregular contractions of the uterus that occur every 20 to 30 minutes. As labor progresses, the contractions increase in frequency and severity. The usual length of labor for a first-time mother is about 13 to 14 hours, and about 8 or 9 hours in a woman who has given birth previously. Wide variations exist, however, in the duration of labor.
